Where’s my VIN?

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is 17 letters and numbers, unique to one vehicle. It never contains I, O or Q, so a round character is always a zero. Always check the number on the vehicle matches the paperwork. What each character means.

Cars, utes & SUVs

VIN plate visible through the base of the windscreen

1. Base of the windscreen

Look through the glass on the driver’s side, where it meets the dashboard.

2. Driver’s door pillar

Open the driver’s door. It’s on a sticker or plate on the door frame.

3. Build plate

Under the bonnet, on the firewall or inner guard, next to the compliance plate.

Motorbikes

Stamped into the frame at the steering head, just behind the handlebars. Turn the bars fully to one side to see it. Motorbike checks.

Boats & jet skis (HIN)

Boats use a 12-character Hull Identification Number. It’s usually on the top right of the transom (the flat back of the hull), on the starboard side. Boat HIN checks.

Trailers & caravans

Look on the A-frame or drawbar near the hitch. Caravans also have a plate near the entry door. Older trailers may have a shorter chassis number. Caravan & trailer checks.

Tractors & machinery

Most have a serial or PIN plate on the main frame or near the operator’s seat. Check the manufacturer’s manual for the exact spot.
