Boat & jet ski HIN check

Boats and personal watercraft can carry finance just like cars. Enter the 12-character Hull Identification Number (HIN) to check for money owing and theft before you buy.

What is a HIN?

A Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a 12-character code that identifies a boat or personal watercraft, much like a VIN identifies a car. The PPSR records security interests in boats and jet skis against the HIN.

Where to find the HIN

Jet ski diagram showing the HIN plate location at the rear of the hull
On most boats and jet skis the HIN is at the rear of the hull.

On most boats the HIN is on the top right of the transom (the flat back of the hull), on the starboard side. On jet skis it’s usually at the rear of the hull. It should match the HIN on the boat’s registration papers.

Checking the trailer too? A boat trailer is a separate item with its own VIN or chassis number, and it can have its own finance. Check the trailer separately.

Why check a used boat?

  • Finance owing. Boats are often bought on finance. An unpaid loan can stay attached to the boat after it’s sold.
  • Theft. Boats, jet skis and outboards are regularly stolen from driveways and marinas.
  • Mismatched paperwork. The HIN on the hull, the registration and the seller’s ID should all line up.

Inspection tips

  • Check the hull for cracks, soft spots and repairs, especially around the transom.
  • Ask for engine hours and service records, and have the motor checked by a marine mechanic.
  • Check the outboard’s serial number against the paperwork.
  • Confirm what’s included in the sale: trailer, electronics, safety gear.

Check the HIN before you buy.
